Chicago’s Yeovil Strikes A Chord For Live Music

A popular Yeovil venue is to launch regular live music in the town centre to showcase local talent and support the live music scene and night time economy.

Chicago’s bar and club on Stars Lane raises the curtain on the first of its ‘Friday Night Live!’ gigs on 7 July. Bands and solo artists, representing different music genres from rock, soul, funk, pop, indie and more, are lined up to entertain over the next three months.

The live music nights will run from 9pm to 11pm every Friday with admission free before 10pm.
Chicago’s general manager Mat Jarratt said: “We are not known as a live music venue but I could see there was a need to give artists from the local area a platform for their work and also somewhere for live music fans to enjoy a night out.

“Although primarily covers, we encourage the performers to include at least one original song in their sets and take the opportunity to promote themselves. We hope to introduce new audiences to our venue and provide something different for our regular clubbers too.”
Mat and his team have sourced acts with the help of local music networks and by watching the bands live or online. BBC Introducing in the West who spotlight local talent are also supportive of the club’s commitment to local artists.

Local musicians will be able to use Chicago’s free of charge as a rehearsal space and as a location for photoshoots and videos if they wish and should contact the club directly for availability.

Mat added: “We will be the only regular live music venue in the town centre. If people come and support the idea, we will be able to extend the three-month programme. We want to have the same quality of acts every week but with music to reflect the diversity of talent locally. It’s going to be 13 awesome gigs so hopefully we will see you there!”

Blues influenced rock and roll band White Station will be the first to appear on Friday 7 July. Friday Night Live! will continue with Jack Humphries (acoustic) on 14 July, Daytona (rock and soul) 21 July and Twisted Vinyl (funk, pop and retro) on 28 July.

The acts in August are Snakebyte (good times rock and roll) on 4 August, Jorden Lindsay, (acoustic pop, soul and alternative) 11 August, The Thatchers (dirty blues and folk with attitude) 18 August, and Microlight (indie rock) on 25 August.

September kicks off with Red Hot Chilli peppers tribute Funky Munks on 1 September, followed by AJ & Elliot from Triple Threat (acoustic covers legends) on 8 September, rappers Terique Henry, Luke Lorenz and DJ Faisal on 22 September, then Crimson on Silver (classic rock) on 29 September.
